A No Holds Barred Approach.

Mafia Wars Drops Below 2 Million Daily Active Users

Mafia Wars has dropped below 2 million DAU ( Daily Active Users) even with them making Italy loot giftable and all the new events & missions going on.

The once powerful Mafia Wars, has dropped below 2 Million daily active users and Zynga as a whole, over the past month alone, has dropped by over 4.3 Million daily active users.

The other top games by Zynga have also seen a huge drop in their numbers. Cityville, Zynga’s top game, has seen their numbers drop over the past month by over almost 1.3 million daily active users & Farmville has also dropped by over 1.25 million daily active users.

What’s driving the players away at Zynga ? According to the players, the number 1 thing driving them away is the fact that the games have gotten to busy. In other words, all the new events, new quests and missions right on top of each other are just to much to keep up with.

They are in some case overlapping other events already going on and with everything they are putting out, the players just don’t have the time to play the game itself. This is frustrating the players because they only have some much time in a day to play the games as real life takes precedent and with everything going on they are just not having any fun anymore.  So they are just quitting and in some cases losing the 1000’s of dollars they have invested in the games.

So where are these players going if they are not playing Zynga games anymore? You would think some of the other social game companies would be picking them up but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Playdom has also seen a downwards trend too. They have lost in the past month over 300,000 daily active users. While Pop Cap has lost over 500,000 daily active users & Electronic Arts has lost over 62,000 daily active users.  So this looks like it is not only confined to Zynga but is happening to all the social game companies.

Here is a snapshot of the top 15 applications on Facebook this week provided by allfacebook.com or you can go there and see the complete list. They have helped provide all the statistics in this story.

So is this the beginning of the end of the social games? I don’t think so, I think they have just finally begun to start leveling out and settling into more realistic numbers. Numbers that investors are going to be able to really use to gauge the future of the industry as well as future advertising rates.

Facebook is even leveling out now. In the past month they have only seen and increase of 1.5 million daily active users. Even though Facebook boasts about having over 500 million total users worldwide they only have about 416 million of them active on a monthly basis & approximately 78 million active on a daily basis.

So will the players come back? Some will,  some wont. The one thing all the players do love about the games is the social aspect of them. They have made some really good friends while playing the games & that is the only thing keeping some players from quitting. So if they do come back that will probably be the main reason. We will see what happens over the next few months and will follow up then.

  1. I have blocked all Zynga games but Mafia. They ask us too much things to do as we dont have another thing i life to do other than play their games. Iloved to plat FV and Cafe World, but they became so demanding, so “begging” al the time and the fun part (decoration) was almost nothing, even talk with your friends and share the game because we dont have time to do anything else than complete the tasks. These games became a JOB not a pass-time. Who likes to work for free??

  3. I am the security officer for Security Officer for TGIF. On my video blog I specifically mention this situation and state clearly Zynga is loosing players because of page load issues and muddeled policy like scripting.
there are a lot of issues but these are the main two.

  4. Zynga is tooooooooooooo slow in fixing their bugs. Farmville takes too long to load…Cityville got bugs with Shockwave or get the message “Do not close browser…” All my MW are expired regardless how old they are 5 seconds old or 4 hours old… It is time Zynga get off their ass and fix all the bugs… Their favorite remedy is to clear the cache and 100% of the time it does not fix anything!

  6. It’s going to drop even lower if they don’t do something – and fast – about the absurd number of spider (and other) pop-ups that interfere with and diminish the quality of play. There needs to be a major “Stop the Pop-Ups” movement as well as give us stuff without making us go out collecting and pestering our friends for it.

  9. I personally stopped playing Frontierville because of the pop up issue, TO MANY POP UPS! I still play CafeWorld, MafiaWars, Farmville and sort of Cityville, although Cityville i have played less of it because of some the changes they made in how many 3x Energy things you can have.
CafeWorld, my biggest grip about them, and probably Farmville is they keep coming out with new stuff like new special ovens to bake bread, pizza etc. yet they dont seem to understand that we HAVE NO PLACE to place them! We need more space! And be nice to have more farms!
MafiaWars-My biggest complaint about them is that I can understand why some people say its boring, all you do is click click click and it tells you what happened, doesnt show anything else. (Yet Im still a daily player there lol)
